ASICS was founded in 1949 in Kobe, Japan, as Onitsuka Co., Ltd. by Kihachiro Onitsuka. The company originally produced basketball shoes and other sports equipment. In 1951, the company released its first running shoe, the Marathon Tabi, which was worn by the Japanese team in the 1952 Helsinki Olympic Games.

Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, Onitsuka Co. continued to develop and release new shoe models, including the Tiger Corsair and the Mexico 66, which became popular both in Japan and overseas. In 1977, the company merged with two other Japanese sportswear companies to form ASICS Corporation, which stands for "Anima Sana In Corpore Sano," a Latin phrase meaning "a sound mind in a sound body."

In the 1980s, ASICS became known for its high-performance running shoes, including the GEL-Lyte and the GEL-Kayano. The company also expanded its product line to include tennis shoes, volleyball shoes, and other sports equipment.
In the 1990s, ASICS continued to innovate and develop new technologies for its shoes, including the GEL cushioning system, which provides shock absorption and support. The company also established a research institute in Kobe, Japan, to study biomechanics and develop new products.

Today, ASICS is a global brand with a wide range of shoes for various sports and activities, including running, tennis, volleyball, and training. The company is committed to sustainability and social responsibility, and has implemented various initiatives to reduce its environmental impact and support local communities.

GEL Cushioning System (1986):

The GEL cushioning system is a key feature of many ASICS shoes, providing superior shock absorption and cushioning to the foot. The system uses silicone gel inserts in the midsole of the shoe, which compress and absorb impact forces during running or other high-impact activities. This reduces the stress on the foot and lower leg, helping to prevent injury and improve comfort.
